Coco Chanel and Spellbound, New Kids in Town at Oak Hill Farm in Holmdel.
HOLMDEL, NJ: When you pull in to park at 177 Stillwell Road in Holmdel (near the Middletown border), you immediately know you’re somewhere special. The building is new yet nostalgic, the design is elegantly simple. Saturday, the parking lot was full for Oak Hill Farm’s grand opening! Entering for the first time, you may not be quite sure what to expect. Perhaps that is by design. The design of owners Rich and Carla Bushey. They have roots in Monmouth County, Rich grew up in Middletown.
When you enter the store at Oak Hill Farms your senses are full. The smell of fresh coffee fills the air mixed with sweet smells of Jersey grown produce, homemade pastries, naturally scented candles, farm honey… Your eyes are taking in a lot at once, there is so much to see from fresh cut farm flowers, colorful jars of jams, artisan gifts, health and wellness products… It’s an exciting place that you know you are going to come back to again and again. On Saturday, the store was bustling all day, as much of the community came out to support the farm, a great fit for Holmdel, a town once full of farms.
TAPinto Holmdel enjoyed visiting with the Bushey’s and touring their new farm, their passion is obvious: “Oak Hill Farms is born out of love for our family and a passion for nature. We believe that the ingredients we use in and on our bodies impacts our health and well-being. While spending hours at grocery stores trying to understand label ingredients, we decided to make a change. This lead us into the idea to make our own wellness products that we knew we could trust.”
The Oak Hill Farm store offers easy carry out foods like farm dairy products; eggs, and milk, goat cheese, meats like salami, and don’t forget the raw honey… “Why not use ingredients we get on our farms? Goat’s milk, Raw Honey, Bees Wax are some of the extraordinary ingredients we are lucky to have and add to our product line. After months of testing we perfected soaps, lotions, lip balms, soy wax candles and other products we handcraft to bring you a clean, wholesome experience you’re sure to love.” Clearly the owners are social marketing mavens as their instagram account already boasts nearly 120,000 followers. Their logo is included in the majority of the products that are sold including candles, mugs, hats, T-shirts, sweatshirts and other food and gift items.
The store has beautiful farmhouse tables that will one day be used for indoor eating enjoyment. However, with social distancing, you can enjoy your pickings at the outdoor picnic seating area. The structure is a barn type design with high ceilings and pleasant music pumped through speakers throughout the store. The public restroom has a “Please 🐝 Quick” sign above the toilet and a “Hey Honey” message in the floor tile. The honey bee theme runs throughout the store, with the owners giving much care to detail.
The building is just the beginning. Oak Hill Farm is six acres of country! The large outside fenced in area has farm animals roaming. Take a walk through the picnic area and into the field to visit with the Alpacas, the chickens and the goats. If you are lucky you may see the pregnant goat give birth to the five kids that owner Rich says she is currently expecting.
Now, back to the Alpacas. Yes there are Alpacas. There is a white one, a black one and at least one brown one. They are quite fancy and may not notice that they are groomed better than the finest poodle in town. Check out the photos accompanying this article and you can meet these lovely creatures. While you are there take a stroll in the back where fresh flowers are growing such as beautiful sunflowers and all forms of beautiful wildflowers are available to see or purchase. On Saturday, even the local butterflies made their way to enjoy the grand opening, fluttering by to land on flowers and even occasionally guests.
According to the owners, you can expect tasteful events such as weddings and other celebrations to be designed in the future. For this grand opening celebration, the welcoming couple and their hard-working staff were happy to serve an eclectic mix of food, drink, candles, fabrics, flowers and more to round out a nice weekend in the country in Holmdel.
